Hiking is considered to be one of the best ways to explore and view the scenic and epic beauty of Big Bear Lake with a friend, a dog or on an adventure all your own!

Big Bear’s best hikes are not just for the sightseer; keeping a gentle pace has been proven to embrace healthy weight loss along with a healthy diet of regular exercise. Plus, walking instead of running helps keep the doctor away, and you may lose weight all the same time!

You likely know that Big Bear is a smaller community that experiences all 4 seasons – summer, spring, fall and winter. Hiking is indeed open all year and all you need to park your vehicle is a forest adventure pass from the Discovery Center on North Shore Drive for the minimal cost of $5 per car. Then, you can park your vehicle at designated trail heads, parking areas and any appropriate exploration areas you want to have a look at.

Speaking of 4 seasons….
Winter is here!
You may be wondering how a wonderful sport such as hiking is kept alive and open throughout the expected snowfall – well, hiking in tennis shoes is over until winter lacks her chill – until then, hiking takes on a whole new way to explore: by wearing snowshoes. This almost bizarre, unique up-side-down equipment is reminiscent of tennis rackets. However, these are strapped to your boots and makes shuffling through snow an easier task – play around a bit, and you’ll soon be embroiled in exercise that burns double the calories than basic hiking or walking trails can in spring or summer.

Where do you get/rent snowshoes? In Big Bear Lake we are happy to refer you to Goldsmith’s Board House, a family owned business for over 45 years! Inside the shop they will measure and fit you for the right equipment from the top skis and boards down to clothing rentals and, of course, the popular snow shoes..

Here are some of the hiking areas you may enjoy this weekend and beyond on this printable map.
